In the clouds – whiteout on the chairlift

Mt Ruapehu can have quickly changing conditions, sitting as one of a small chain of   volcanic peaks sitting down the spine of New Zealand’s North Island means that any weather pattern makes it’s impact felt.

On clear days the West coastline can be seen out past Mt Egmont/Taranaki – on others this is the limit of visibility, and when you are caught on one of the chairs, all you can do is sit and wait for the end of the line to loom out of the clouds. Then – the choice, hunker down and hope for a clearance or feel your way down what was familiar slopes under clear skies, but now could be anywhere in the world.

out beyond my hand, the world falls away down the Turoa slopes
